About Flicker & Flora
The Basics
Flicker & Flora is grounded in a belief of creative reuse. We find unique vessels as well as those that would otherwise end up in a landfill and repurpose them into one-of-a-kind hand-poured soy and beeswax candles. The dust cover or tag included with each candle is made of handcrafted seed paper containing a low-growing wildflower seed mix, which can be planted in the vessel after the candle is burned.
About the Candles
Each candle is produced in small batches and hand-poured in Lockport, NY. We only use natural soy wax, pure beeswax, refined coconut oil, lead-free cotton wicks, and premium fragrance oils. We don’t use any additives or dyes, to allow for the cleanest, healthiest burn. All of our products are free of parabens, phthalate, and paraffin.
About the Wax
Our soy wax is ethically and sustainably produced and harvested in the Midwest, USA. It is a 100% vegetable wax containing no animal by products and is never tested on animals.
Our beeswax is sourced from two small family-owned and operated apiaries - one in the Finger Lakes region of New York, the other in Western New York. The beekeepers recognize the importance of bees to our ecosystem, and pay special attention to the health of their bees. They maintain approximately 100 hives or less, and the wax is only harvested when there is enough excess that its removal will not be detrimental to the health of the hive.
How your wax choice will impact your candle experience
Soy wax and beeswax have very different properties, and your wax selection will impact your candle experience. The biggest difference is in their ability to hold fragrance. Traditionally, beeswax is not used for scented candles. Beeswax doesn't like to hold on to fragrance, and it is possible to end up with an almost unscented candle even when using the same amount of fragrance as in a soy candle. The addition of coconut oil to beeswax helps the candle to maintain a stronger scent. However, our beeswax candles will always have a lighter scent than our soy wax candles. Additionally, beeswax has its own natural honey-like fragrance, which may come through along with the fragrance oils when you burn your candles. Both types of wax make lovely candles, so the selection you make is entirely a matter of personal preference. If you are unsure of which wax to use, feel free to send us an email and we will be happy to help you.
